About Me

Lesl Harker teaches and plays the Irish flute and tin whistle. Lesl serves as a master for the NJ and Pennsylvania State Arts Councils' folk arts Apprenticeship programs, and teaches Irish flute privately in Union County, NJ.

She specializes in the fluid old-style music of East County Galway. Drawing from a long apprenticeship to the late Galway flutist and National Heritage Fellow Mike Rafferty, she has also published two award-winning Rafferty tune books for use by students, teachers and Irish music enthusiasts.

Lesl was featured in the "Passing it On" magazine from the NJ State Arts Council. Read it here:

Teaching Style

I teach using the easy Irish traditional method, by ear. What happens in a lesson:

You will learn a tune in small segments, bit by bit, until we can play the entire tune together. In a virtual online lesson, there is a time lag so we will only play small sections together slowly.

We address individual technique and questions. You learn at your own pace.
I will also record the tune slowly for you to use for practice. If you need notation for the tune, it is available but not necessary. You may surprise yourself with how quickly you will pick up the tune in this way, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. It's an easy skill!
