This month on Uncovered: From the Vault of the Virginia Folklife Program we are premiering a gem of a performance featuring Aaron and Matthew Olwell with pianist Cleek Schrey with an opening number from longtime Prism Coffeehouse Artistic Director Fred Boyce.
Aaron Olwell and his brother Matthew play a wide spectrum of traditional music, from jazz rooted in New Orleans to the Irish music that’s performed through the world-renowned flutes their family is known for building. In 2005 Aaron apprenticed under his father Patrick in the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program.
“I never tried to push this on my sons. Of course, I always hoped that they would take an interest in music, but I never really imagined that Aaron would want to take up working with the old man,” said Patrick Olwell at the time. “It’s really a special thing, working everyday in the shop with your son. This is something that used to be quite common, but you just don’t see it much anymore. It’s allowed us to get to know one another in a completely different way.”
A live Q&A with the performers follows.
