We joined the National Museum of American Jewish History in celebrating the birthday of National Heritage Fellow and “Keeper of the Flame” Flory Jagoda during a lunchtime concert on December 21, 2020. This livestream features archival performances with Flory and her longtime collaborators Susan Gaeta and Howard Bass.
Flory sings in Ladino, the language of the Sephardic Jewish people, who settled in the Balkan region after they were forced into exile from Spain and Portugal in the fifteenth century. She learned the songs from her nona, or grandmother, and spent her life singing and teaching songs in her native tongue. Susan has been her apprentice for decades and has even taken on her own apprentice, the talented multi-instrumentalist Gina Sobel.
We were thrilled to be partner with Jon Lohman and the Center for Cultural Vibrancy on this celebration of Flory Jagoda’s life.
