Since 1988 the Virginia Folklife Program at Virginia Humanities has presented, documented, and celebrated the new and traditional cultures of Virginia, ensuring the continued vibrancy of our treasured cultural traditions for future generations and reaching audiences across Virginia.
From gospel singing to decoy carving, from bluegrass banjo playing to oyster shucking, and from square dancing to soul food cooking, Virginia Folklife inspires the deepened understanding and continued creation of culture in our Commonwealth. Please consider making a gift to sustain our work presenting, documenting, and celebrating the cultures of the Commonwealth.

How Money is Spent
Donations support five interconnected program activities, which provide direct services to Folklife masters, apprentices, students, and audiences of all ages, across the state:
- One-on-one Folklife apprenticeships
- Live public performances and demonstrations
- Documentation and archiving of Virginia’s cultural traditions
- School-based education and community outreach
- Cultural exchange initiatives
Our cultural traditions, old and new, have the power to inspire hope, connect us across our differences, and strengthen our communities as Virginians. This work has never been more important, and we’d be thrilled to have you as a supporter.
