About the Virginia Folklore Society

The Virginia Folklore Society was founded on April 17, 1913, by C. Alphonso Smith, Edgar Allen Poe Professor of English Literature in the English Department, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. The Society is thus one of the oldest state folklore societies in the country.

The Virginia Folklore Society is a membership organization for those interested in folklore in Virginia to connect, learn, create, and share their work. We are curious people who collaborate to support and celebrate traditional cultures by growing a community of shared practice. We believe Virginia folklore belongs to all of us.
