Whitetop Mountain Band have been part of the Virginia Folklife Program for just about as long as the program’s been in existence. They epitomize the driving rhythm and voicing of old time dance music of the region, when the music starts the dance boards come out.

The late, great fiddle player Thornton Spencer took on his daughter Martha in an apprentice in our 2006 apprenticeship class, teaching her his style of old-time fiddle. In 2019 we honored Emily Spencer as a master in clawhammer banjo. Emily and Martha have showcased their singing abilities at folk festivals around the country.

Martha and her mother Emily will be joining us at noon on April 27 to view and talk about a number of recordings from our tape archive that span decades. Tune in live on Facebook or register on Zoom.
