The Virginia Festival of the Book, in partnership with the Virginia Folklife Program and the Front Porch, present Barry Bergey and Tom Pich, author and photographer of Folk Masters, discussing their tribute to folk artists who have been named National Heritage Fellows, the highest honor the U.S. government awards to traditional artists, with Virginia state folklorist Jon Lohman. National Heritage Fellows Phil Wiggins and Sherman Holmes will perform with Almeta Ingram-Miller, Cora Harvey Armstrong, and Jared Pool.
Bergey is the former director of folk and traditional arts at the National Endowment for the Arts. He and photographer Tom Pich spent years and traveled thousands of miles to capture incredibly beautiful portraits of these folk and traditional artists, selected for the NEA’s National Heritage Fellowship. Hear the remarkable stories behind each photograph and see the photographs in this one-time gallery showing.
The concert with National Heritage Fellowship winners will feature gospel, blues, and soul music. Ingram-Miller and Armstrong will scorch the paint off the mics with their powerful singing, while Wiggins will rip into the blues on harmonica. They will be joined by Holmes, who is celebrating the release of his first solo album after more than fifty years performing with the Holmes Brothers, and Pool, who is a guitar and mandolin player with Virginia roots in bluegrass.
