Carla Ann Fosbre
Bedford County | Teaching and Performing Artist
Areas of Expertise:Appalachian mountain dulcimer, traditional old time folk songs from America and the British Isles
About Me
I teach lessons on the Appalachian dulcimer in the style of Jean Ritchie, Don Pedi, David Schnauffer, the Carter Family and many more. I am fluent in music theory and also teach to play by ear. I am a song catcher and constantly research, play, sing and teach the old folk songs collected by Cecil Sharp. I have taught piano since 1998 and have played the mountain and bowed dulcimers since 2015. I am a member of the First National Dulcimer Orchestra and the Roanoke Valley Dulcimer Group. I have presented workshops in mountain dulcimer and have given dulcimer presentations at elementary, high schools and libraries. I have performed at various venues. I am also on the board of the Smith Mountain Lake Arts Council in Bedford County, Virginia. My passion is to preserve old time, traditional mountain music and to hand it down to our children so that this wonderful part of our common human existence will not be lost.
Teaching Style
Very easy going. Fun. Very interested in the student’s uniqueness and what they want to learn from lessons. I like to talk about the background of each piece so that every student can get more out of every song they learn.
