Sephardic Folk Songs: The Journey Continues

Page [1] [2] [3]

A Note To Listners:
As is true of most languages, spellings and phrasings differ from one geographical area to another. The Ladino language as presented on these pages, is specific to Sarajevo, Bosnia, and for Flory Jagoda, is literally “la lingua de la madre,” the language of her mother and her grandmother.

This record is dedicated to my parents, Frances and Phillip Feltman, who love me unconditionally and inspire me through their love for the Jewish people, and to my amazing sons, Andreas, Raphael, Julian and Adriel.
-Susan Gaeta

My Nona would say, “Si nu puedis meter la alma, nu kantis,”—
“If you can’t put soul into your songs, don’t bother to sing at all.”
-Flory Jagoda

7. The Woman’s Prayer
With this candle
We pray to God
God of our Fathers
Abraham, Isaac and Jacob
To grant us good life and health
To all my dear ones
And the whole world
With this candle
We pray to God
God of our Mothers
of Israel
Sarah, Rebecca, Leah and Rachel
To grant us peace and love
To all my dear ones
And the whole world
Amen

Mother mine, if I die
Cantors I do not want
But twelve young men
Walking before my coffin
Halva and sugar
Mother mine, if I die
Let then carry me gently, slowly
So they may see that I am
a young maiden
Then they will cry
Halva and sugar

9. El Diya De Purim

A los Djidyos ke se avize
En Adar katordze i kindze

9. Purim Day
Mordechai’s proclamation
To all the Jews is
That the 14th and 15th of Adar
Is the day of Purim
Long life to me, long live the King
Long live all of Israel
Long live Queen Ester
Who gave us so much pleasure
Haman was one of many persecutors
May he be cursed
He wanted to do away with the Jews
In the days of Purim
With sugar and flour
The godmother is coming to us
To make fine halvah
For the days of Purim

11. From God’s Mouth
No one is as holy as God
And no one as pious as the
son of Amram
Nothing protects
like our Law
And no one reads it
like Israel
From God’s mouth,
From God’s mouth
All the Jews should
be blessed.
Mip-pi-el, mip-pe-el
Yevorah kol Israel
There is no one as mighty as God
And no one as blessed as the
son of Amram
There is nothing greater
than our Law
And no one reads it
like Israel.
There is no one as beautiful as God
No sage as wise as the
son of Amram
There is nothing purer
than our Law
And no one reads it
like Israel
There is no one as good as God
And no one purer than the
son of Amram
There is nothing more righteous
than our Law
And no one reads it
like Israel

12. Anderleto
Anderleto, my Anderleto
My dear one, my beloved
My dear one, my beloved
I want you more, I love you more
Than the king and all his kingdom
Than the king and all his kingdom
Two sons have I from you
And two from the king makes four
And two from the king makes four
The king’s sons have horses
And your sons are in my arms
And your sons are in my arms
