Thanks Barry. I was up there with him, along with Jim Lauderdale. What a special morning, and what an amazing man. Best, Jon Lohman Virginia Folklife Program
i just this preacher newsome in bristol tn at a music fest. he did a sunday morning workshop on gospel and it was one of the most moving things i have ever witnessed. it was unreal emotion.
I have lived and breathed this in the mountains of North Carolina. Sunday mornings in the shadow of Mt. Mitchell where in a small Pensacola Methodist Church, Lon Autrey sang in the same style with a passion and grace only early settlers past on to their children and grandchildren. He, one of many, inspired myself down a road of music that has also blessed and encoraged others to develope their own musical gifts. Its a sound thats growing faint with each passing day. What a passionate and emotional experience it must be to attend a service at Frank Newsome's Old Regular Baptist Church in Haysi, Virginia. I'd guess that the tears flow freely. Whether you share his faith or not, he sums up the pain of human suffering more eloquently than any singer I've heard in a long, long time.
Bro Frank is one of the most precious brother's the Regular Baptist has. I have known him for many years. He and my deceased husbands has been in many meetings together. His name was Sollie Miller Jr. tomorrow will be 3 years since he went home to be with Jesus. But he sang the same songs bro Fank does. He was a deacon at The Little Memory Church in Sunman, Indiana. Love you bro Frank and Sister Geraldine. Sister Georgia(Miller) Moore
god blessed him with that voice
enjoyed this bro. newsome. its one of my mothers favorites. she enjoyed it also.
Wonderful,just wonderful.Thank you!!!!!
There is a theory about collective memory--some things that are deep and primal that we pass on genetically. When I hear celtic music it moves me in such a way that I know it is a part of me. And this rendition of a song I have heard many times before moves me in such a way. I am Scots-Irish and have my roots in England, Scotland, Ireland then to Colonial America: Pennsylvania, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas. What a beautiful sound! Not to mention the precious words!
I love you Brother Frank keep up the good work
this is the real thing
